In the issue of January and February 2016issue, Hydromag magazine presents the results of comparison tests carried out on the most important substrate brands. Among others CANNA, BIOBIZZ, U-GRO, NUTRIFIELD, PLAGRON, ATAMI, GROWTH TECHNOLOGY, PLATINIUM...
In this issue, the COCO substrate is tested because it is the media of choice for most growers. Coco substrate is a fairly uniform product to the naked eye, so it is difficult to see the differences between brands. Hydromag has tested each substrate by giving them a grade according to their expected performance 
3 criteria of comparison are important:
1. THE VOLUME
In 40L of coco is there really 40L of coco?
2. THE EC AND PH RATE
Has the washing and rinsing process been well respected? Is the substrate neutral enough to welcome the plant in the best possible conditions ?
3. THE BUFFERING
This is not indicated on the bags, but each brand carries out a buffering process of the Coco substrate. This allows the substrate to retain its qualities, including Calcium, Barium Chloride rate, Sodium were also tested to check the salinity/acidity of each susbstrate.

This relatively unknown Coco brand is a nice surprise. It is really clean, has very good bag volume and a pleasantly low sodium level. The only little extra that could be provided would be a higher buffer value for calcium. Still, it's a great product, one we would be happy to use ourselves.

Because of their good performance on the comparison of coconuts in the previous issues, we expected no less from Platinium. The PH and EC levels did the job and the bulk density is good. Only the return on volume is a bit shy but other than that, nothing to quibble about.
Indeed, in the Edition of May and June 2015edition, Hydromag already revealed the tests of the Earth substrates of many brands based on many criteria.
