The fertilizers available to indoor and outdoor growers are all different in their formulation (solid fertilizer, gaseous or liquid fertilizer solution) but especially in their different compositions, as shown in the explanations concerning nitrogen below. Some fertilizers are composed of only one form of nitrogen. This is the case with urea (100% ureic N), anhydrous ammonia (100% NH3) and potassium nitrate (100% nitric N).
But most fertilizers have mixed formulas. Their composition greatly influences the availability ofnitrogen for crops. Indeed, the ammonia, nitric and urea forms are transformed at variable rates, determined by the microbiological activity of the soil.
Urea undergoes hydrolysis to take the ammonia form. This can be adsorbed and temporarily retained on the soil's clay-humus complex or used by soil microorganisms that are then in competition with the plant.
The ammoniacal form can also evolve rapidly to the nitric form as soon as nitrification is active in a warm, aerated and humid soil.
The nitric form is completely released into the soil solution and is preferentially fed to the plant.
What is organic nitrogen?
Organic nitrogen makes up most of the nitrogen in the soil.
Organic nitrogen results from the organic matter of the soil to which is added what comes from crop residues or animal excrements.
Organic nitrogen is made up of various nitrogenous compounds whose mineralization is very variable and very difficult to predict. Except for some unique technologies like Aminoweed 56 which contains 9% of organic nitrogen 100% assimilable in spraying, because normally organic nitrogen is also difficult to predict according to its level of absorption.
What is urea nitrogen
It is a form of nitrogen that the soil does not retain.
It is transformed under the effect of hydrolysis into NH4+ (ammonium), a transformation that is accompanied by very significant losses by volatilization (gaseous loss of ammonia NH3) that can reach up to 40%. In current practice, an average loss of 15% of the nitrogen is necessary.

Ammoniacal nitrogen or ammonium
It results from the combination of nitrogen (N) and hydrogen (H). Its chemical formula NH4+ is very close to that of the ammonia gas NH3 which volatilizes in the air.
This transformation is faster when the temperature increases and when the pH around the fertilizer granule is higher than 7.5.
Thanks to its positive charge NH4+ is fixed on the clay-humus complex of the soil, which limits the risk of entrainment in depth but also the instantaneous availability for the plants. The microbial activity of the soil consumes ammonium and transforms it into nitric nitrogen, this is the process of nitrification.
Nitric nitrogen or nitrate
It is formed naturally by the combination of nitrogen (N)e
Nitric nitrogen fertilizers act quickly, while ammonium fertilizers act more slowly.
As for urea and cyanamide, they contain neither nitrate nor ammonium. Thenitrogen they provide cannot therefore be directly absorbed by the plant. To make it available, it must undergo transformation processes.
