The chioggia beet has a white flesh with alternating pink and white concentric circles, sweet and mild.
Family : Amaranthaceae
Latin name : Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris
Genus reproducible seeds
Weight : 1.5 g
Sowing and harvesting schedule:
Soil maintenance: rich, deeply loosened soil to avoid forked roots. Bury composted manure in the fall. Sensitive to frost.
Exposure: sunny.
Sowing: 3 cm deep in the ground, thin out to keep only one plant every 15 cm
Emergence: in 8 to 10 days.
Watering moderate but regular in summer in case of high heat. The roots become fibrous due to lack of water.
Associated culture: the beet appreciates the company of kohlrabi, lettuce, onion, dwarf bean and herbs such as dill and savory.
Harvest: from sowing to planting, it takes 5 to 8 weeks. Count on 4½ to 5 months of cultivation from sowing to harvest.
Conservation: the latest can be stored in sand (in cool, dry and ventilated places: cellar). To do this cut the foliage flush with the collar, and shorten the tapered part of the root.
Origin: beet has been known as a vegetable since antiquity.
