Growing Guide
Soil care: Kohlrabi prefers very fertile soil that is kept moist otherwise it becomes fibrous.
Sowing: 1 cm deep in the nursery or in the field, 50 cm between plants and between rows.
Emergence: in 8 days in soil at 20°C.
Watering: regular
Harvest: when the root reaches a minimum weight of 200 g.
Preservation: can be stored in a silo or in a cellar during the winter.
Origin: it is native of the Mediterranean basin. The Romans called it the "Pompei cabbage". It is somewhat neglected nowadays for having been a war food.
Advice from La Semence Bio®: an application of 2 to 3 cm of well decomposed compost is normally adequate. The growth must be fast and regular to obtain good quality roots.
In the kitchen
Kohlrabi can be cooked raw in salads or cooked in gratins, frying pans, soups... Its sweetness allows you to combine it to your liking. You can also use its stems and tops in quiches or pan-fried dishes.
