As roots grow in containers, they eventually reach the sides. With rigid-walled pots, as the roots reach the walls of the pot, they begin to circle and continue to circulate in search of a more favorable environment. These root systems have very few branches, are often tangled up in themselves and, depending on the type of plant, have produced a taproot. These characteristics can hamper the plant's rate of growth and, in some cases, its chances of survival when transplanted.
